Degenerative diseases of the spine.
In middle and older age, there are quite common cervical or lumbar spine pains. These are in most cases based on degenerative changes. Only a small proportion of patients will require surgical treatment.
Degenerative disease of the cervical spine
In the case of a degenerative cervical spine disease, the most common cause is the incision of the intervertebral discs that repress the spinal cord and the outgoing nerve roots to the upper limbs. The surgical access is from the front of the neck - when large vessels andtrachea with esophagus are pushed out. In this way the front of the cervical spine is reached, in the next phase under the operating microscope by means of special tools the damaged disc is removed and the nervous roots are released. Removed disk is replaced by an "artificial disc", which in the future ensures the so-called "bone fusion", which is a permanent bone joint of two neighboring vertebrae. These artificial plates are made of titanium alloys. The period of hospitalization after this exercise is 7 days, and the postoperative necessity of the neck collar for 4 weeks.
Degenerative disease of the lumbar spine
The lumbar spine is more prone to a more modern degenerative disability due to the modern lifestyle. Indications for surgery are inefficiency of conservative treatment accompanied by radicular problems (nerve struggles). In the lumbar spine, it is a wide combination of anatomical changes that I always deal with in a complex way. In younger patients, when finding soft hernia, I only remove the disc. In elderly patients where there are already more extensive degenerative changes, I choose a stabilization operation with replacement of the damaged intervertebral discs. Since 2007, I have been working with lumbar spine only with mininvasive technique (see miniinvasive approach). The period of hospitalization is 10-14 days. A total of 3 months the patient is wearing a lumbar belt, rehabilitated according to the instructions obtained during the hospital stay.
